Introduction To Linguistic

 SEMANTICS and PRAGMATIC

  • Semantics is the study of meaning, or more precisely, the study of the relation between linguistic expressions and their meanings
  • Pragmatics is the study of context, or more precisely, a study of the way context can influence our understanding of linguistic utterances
Diferences of Semantic
Semantics is the study of meaning. A lot of study areas related to language is covered. Semantics help in getting a sense of meaning in context to writers, speakers, readers of learners. It also helps in known that how the meanings got change over a period of time. It is concerned with the conceptual meaning related to words. Semantics deals with the meaning according to vocabulary and grammar, it does not focus on the context. The focus is only on the general rules used for a language.
Diferences of Pragmatic
Pragmatics is all about questions of use, whereas Semantics is all about question of meaning. It deals with that aspect of meaning which is dependent on the context. Semantics deals with the study of what signs indicate while Pragmatics deals with the relation of signs to their users and interpreters.

Semantics Versus Pragmatic

Studies meaning in isolation (literal meaning of a sentence)

e.g : Today is Friday. →   It means “Today is the weekend

Studies meaning in context (intended meaning of a speaker)

e.g : Today is Friday. → It may imply suggestion, invitation, etc

Semanticists take meaning to be inherent property of language e.g: Dog!

Pragmatists regard meaning as something that is realized in the course of communication e.g: Dog! *warning*

In conclusion, while semantics provides the foundation of meaning through language structure, pragmatics brings in the richness of meaning by considering context and the dynamics of communication. Both are essential for a full understanding of how we convey and interpret meaning in language.
